Notes from Antwerp.

In less than a week I have managed to get some seriously lost time. Both by bicycle (took me 30 min to find my 10-min-away-home) and by bus, only to end up in a place called Heist-op-den-Berg which really doesn't sound like the place to be. Ever.

I haven't started working yet. And being that I haven't really taken summer vacation since I was 14 years old (except for a 2 week graduationtrip to Crete in 2003), I am feeling very useless. In discussions with swedish students about their summerplans many are not working at all and just vacationing.. I have a lot of hows and whats and whys and whens about that...
WHAT do they do all day???
Yesterday I even went driving around whole Belgium with Marlous to take pictures of church windows, for her work. I felt a little less useless to the world.

Then again, this is a good time to catch up on some reading. Again I am head over heels in love with the writer Bill Bryson. This is from his book Notes from a Big Country:

"...Consider this intriguing fact: almost 50,000 Americans are injured each year by pencils, pens and other desk accessories. How do they do it? I have spent many long hours sat at desks when I would have greeted almost any kind of injury as a welcome diversion, but never once have I come close to achieving actual bodily harm.
So I ask again: how do they do it? These are, bear in mind, injuries severe enough to warrant a trip to an emergency room. Putting a staple in the tip of your index finger (which I have done quite a lot, sometimes only semi-accidentally) doesn't count. I am looking around my desk now and unless I put my head in the laser printer or stab myself with the scissors I cannot see a single source of potential harm within 10 feet..."

So much for productivity....Efterfest of the year! - in black/white!

The never ending garden party continued with bbq-ing at Ulrikedal followed by what Swedes call "förfest" (pre-party). .

Ulrikedal

Later on we ended up at Smålands Nation attending DISCOBEDIENCE

The now more famous "Efterfest" at home in our kitchen went a bit awry with some bad dancing and singing into.. what all seemed like great ideas at the time:
Martin, Andreas, Annie and Carl
nobody knows the lyrics to Come on Eileen (you can always pretend)
Hedvig performing S.O.S. by Abba

Annie, are you ok?

Our version of Twist and Shout

Carl with Suspicious Minds

Productivity
it´s nine o´clock in the morning and it´s been a productive day already.

Sommartider i Sverige!!

The thesis is almost writing itself and the 29th of May celebration breaks out, champagne is poured, cheers and high-fives all around.

Life in Lund these days is sweet and a half. It feels like a never ending garden party.. The weather is so great (every single day) with sun and t-shirt-degrees until midnight!
Its hard to feel sorry for friends at home moulding in the basement studying for exams when sipping a cocktail, bbq-ing on the roof and playing weird outdoors viking games (kind of like boccia, but not) in the garden. .

Today another summerday playing tennis in the sun with Andreas. Our new hobby. I hadn´t touched my racket since I was seventeen but now I have the fever..I need to go fish for a tennispartner in Belgium this summer. I think it is the greatest sport.

I have to confess I was involved in a chick-flick-Meg Ryan-marathon at one point. Sleepless in Seattle was tears and candlelight but Addicted to love we knew was going to be good, and by good we mean really really “My eyes! My eyes!” bad.

Lunda-Valborg in photos!!

It all started with champagne-breakfast at 07.45 in the morning..Then I´m going to let the photos of this great day speak for themselves:

our base-camp by the fountain

Annie and Lisen
Sofie and Andreas
Carl and Martin
art
Andreas and Martin
Annika, Tommy and Pippi
drunk people in the fountain
the not-so-pure fountain

And with this last photo you just have to take my word for that later in the day two boys and one girl ran around butt-naked in there. I´m pretending they had to do a dare but you really don´t have to go TOO far on Valborg. By any stretch of the imagination. Serious.

This song was kept on constant rotation in the park...all day long:

here is some random bad photography from our Anti-pasti night at home.. just another reason to empty out the bar on a wednesday. These are the people I live with ( I just realized they haven´t formally been introduced): Andreas, Martin, Annie and Lisen.

Den Lille Havfrue

Summer is closer than when I wrote my last post. Things are looking up. I spent a much better part of yesterday in Copenhagen with two of my good old 6Yclassmates, Finnur and Friðrik.

Sponsored by Tuborg we walked our way to the icon of Copenhagen - The Little mermaid - to have a sit with her and beer in the sun. Copenhagen style.

Poor little mermaid. She is just sitting on her rock all day - totally exposed to the public. No bra or anything (except in 1961). Being photographed with 10.000 tourists every day. Many of whom reaching for her breasts. Not to mention the sightseeing tour-boat sliding by to check out her ass. Talk about a rough life. And a bad luck be a lady.

The Little Mermaid has had a hard time in Copenhagen:

1961 - September 1
Bra & knickers were painted on her, and her hair was 'dyed' red
1963 - April 28
She was covered in red paint
1964 - April 24
She was decapitated
1976 - July 15
She was covered in paint
1984 - July 22
Her right arm was cut off
1990 - August 5
Another attempt to decapitate her was made
1998 - January 6
She was decapitated
2003 - September 11
She was removed from her stone and pushed into the water

(From VisitCopenhagen.com)

These days "her skin" is covered in orange paint. Someone in our group claimed she had gotten herself a sun tan. Poor little mermaid.
A toast of Tuborg to her and her turbulent life.

Expressness of less freshness.

Ok, coffee and then start. Here we go. Bachelor thesis.
The joyfulness of Revenue Management.

Something is happening to everyone. Downward spirals everywhere.
The general shortness of feeling fresh.
Our house-life is truly blossoming though:)
The singleness of everyone is creating a togetherness. I like - ness words today. Awsomeness. Fabulousness. I can go at it all day.

I think it´s because of summer being so close but yet soooo far.

I´m in love with this video.

Wine and sun, beer on the roof.
These days people are honestly either breaking up or having babies, having babies or breaking up. Which is it people?

It´s now official that Charlotte Perrelli will represent Sweden this year.
Charlotte Perrelli. Name rings a bell, eh?
Yes, this is the same beach barbie that won in 1999 (with the Abba song) when our Selma got 2nd.

This swedish entry follows the whole Eurovision recipe. Carolas wind-maker, Nanne Grönvalls two blond bimbo dancers and the choreography of Alcazar. It´s all bullet proof. Very professional. Normally she should get far. Heja Sverige!

HAPPY EASTER!!

I´ll be in Belgium, country of chocolate. If they only sold Nóa Síríus.
Honestly, is there a nation that eats as much chocolate as Icelanders do during Easter?
I want to see some statistics.
You don´t eat breakfast, you don´t eat lunch, you don´t eat dinner. You eat chocolate. All day. You eat chocolate until you get so sick you think you´re gonna throw up.. and then you eat some more. The days, the weeks, the rest of the year you feel like you never want to eat chocolate again. But then comes Easter. Again.

Ooh, girl.
Obviously the Tegan and Sara concert was amazing.
Listening Northern States supporting act made me remember how much I adore rap and rhyming. They must have a great time writing their lyrics.. cause the bullshit people bring out has no limits.
I remember being 11-12 and obsessing over this one rhyming dictionary at the school library. During homework I´d write lame rhymes.

Truthfully I don´t listen to this music genre day-to-day anymore. But live rappers can sell me anything.
Politicians should really explore this dynamic.

Canadian twin concert tonight!

I am a huge fan of all their five records.

Most of their songs are about love and heartbreak. And as we all know love hurts.
I once read that Tegan got her heart broken not the regular way.. but the way that her partner of 5 years dumped her over a payphone 4000 miles away and then changed her phone number to add salt to the injury. . Autsh! Love does hurt.
She added that at least there is nothing worse. Only death.. and that happening again.

Among fans they are well known for their stage-banter.

From Sweden with Love.

I don´t have a lot to tell you. This life-chapters recipe in claiming some large amounts of books on business and accounting (or "don´t count me in" as we funny people like to say). The whole dish doesn´t taste good. Boring, if you will. But it´s all good..people around me are cooking the same shit.

Last night I went to the first meeting of working at Lunds "largest" music festival. One joboption was to take care of the artist and doing whatever "to make them happy".
But I´m thinking there is always free cheese in a mousetrap. Who wants to end up getting strange strangers 500 green M&Ms? is what I´m thinking. So Im sticking with selling some merchandise, instead.

If you were trying to search sense in this whole post, stop right there, it doesn´t make any.

This girl from Stockholm was in Lund yesterday. Her new album "Youth Novels" was released recently.

I left a good job in the city . .

I´m getting reaquainted with the queen herself. Did anyone catch her performing with Beyonce at The Grammy Awards!! Marlous and I were suppose to go on a trip by the sea; but tuning in on Tina.. fuck the sea. I almost cried. I remember overlistening to my mothers Tina Turner cassette.. I miss the days of "rewinding".
My eleven year old Sony Walkman just played its last tunes and I feel like I lost a family member. I refuse to get an iPod. Love has got to do with it. I am a full on past addict. Rolling on a river.

Standing in the way of control

Barf. Another live case oral examination tomorrow. Analyzing the international computermarket with focus on Dell computers. Am I boring you already?
My strategy is to make it look like I know what I´m talking about. But I don´t. Basically throw in some fancy words like "graphic processing units" and "SAP system customizations" every now and then. .
This stress makes me feel self-destructive. If I would have smoked once upon a time. And quit. This would be the day I would start again. I think Seb left a vodka bottle here somewhere. . .

Music is my beach house

I just started a new course with the catchy title "Strategy and organisation management". They don´t really sugarcoat it for you. We already have an oral examination on friday where we are suppose to analyze the russian ice cream market and bring ideas to the table of how a domestic ice cream company is suppose to strategize in a competitive market economy?!! Yeah!
I think I need to put on my glasses for this. The keyword being: This.

Neither here Nor there

Back on Scandinavian soil, Lund. Imported from an amazing three week stay in Reykjavik. At the end of it there was utter snowkaos in Keflavik airport. The plane couldn´t leave on time cause they had to "DEFROST?!" the plane and showel the snow away. Defrost you say? Whatever they meant it didn´t sound comforting at the time.

The book-clubbers corner
I fell into a book my brother gave me by Bill Bryson, “Neither here Nor there” (travels in Europe). If you are big on travels this book is amazing. I find it especially amazing reading about the places I´ve been to myself. I´m dreaming of the day I start my Interrailing.

Here are a few lines from the book:

PARIS: “. . .Finally, the pedestrian light turns green and you step off the kerb and all the cars come charging at you. And I don´t care how paranoid or irrational this sounds, but I know for a fact that the people of Paris want me dead. . . .”

BELGIUM: “. . .I spent a couple of pleasantly pointless days wandering around Belgium by train. As countries go, Belgium is a curiosity. It´s not one nation at all, but two, northern Dutch-speaking Flanders and southern French-speaking Wallonia. . . The Flemings can´t stand the Walloons and the Walloons can´t stand the Flemings, but when you talk to them a little you realize that what holds them together is an even deeper disdain for the French and the Dutch. . "

Furthermore he says: – and I swear to god this is SO true (Marlous does this all the time!) –

“. . I once walked around in Antwerp for a day with a Dutch-speaking local and on every corner he would indicate to me with sliding eyes some innocent-looking couple and mutter disgustedly under his breath, ´Dutch´. He was astonished that I couldn´t tell the difference between a Dutch person and a Fleming. .”

Radioini.
I am working at a crazy post office. And when I say crazy you don´t know the half of it. So I am listening to commercial radio from 7.30- 17.00 every day. You can imagine what that does to a girl.
Today I had enough of this instant replays of Rihanna (even though I love her umbrella), DJ Tiesto and poor mental Britney Spears (who apparently is soon to be saved by Dr. Phil). I´m all up in radio-gossip. So now I know Fisherman´s woman by heart. I didn´t know she was so shy and spoke with such an extreme icelandic accent including some "héddna". Didn´t she move to London.

Time running.
Happy New Year!!

Days, weeks and years went by. I wrapped things up in Sweden by turning in my essay. Devoted horror. I managed to get to Copenhagen without a scratch. On Ströget it seemed like everyone had gone just a bit hysterical. Christmas shopping and all kinds of madness. In Kastrup airport things were even worse. Our flight home was informed "cancelled" on all boards (great.) but rumors among Icelanders were that someone got a text message from Icelandair to ignore it..Doesn´t somebody have control over that flightboard??..people were going mad. In the midst of it all a little gospel choir started shouting out Jesus loves you! and Praise the Lord! soon enough big parts of the terminal were clapping hands and singing Oh happy day.
This is were I got back my lost Christmas mood and oh happy day we got to fly home at last.

Christmas has been amazing to say the least. Been quite a bit of snow here!! Ásrún, dad and I even made a 2 meters high snowman. I finally got to see the little baby boy who is the most beautiful thing in the world. As well as my great friends and family. Its been nothing but wonderful until 2 days ago when Bjarki and Maggi beat me and Brynja in Trivial Pursuit.

The annual 6.Y (my old high school class) - party was very colorful as always. A few of us ended downtown at Café Oliver slamming to Guns´n Roses Paradise city and what not..At this point Quentin Tarantino (who likes to spend his New Year in Rvk) was standing next to us on a table with hands in the air and two little girls in the net (hot stuff).

New Years yesterday. Right before lighting up the biggest firework we go all nostalgic and remember New Year of ´98 when 3 of the kids get sent to the emergency in light of explosives. Now the biggest one gets lit. The damn thing gets stuck in the bottle and is clearly about to explode right there in front of our house. It was every man for himself and in the nick of time we got to save grandma into the house. *Bang*

Normally I don´t like after midnight New Years parties with the whole expectations and all. But this New Years was the best ever! The old gang from Laugarnes neighborhood (L-town) went to NASA for "the last" 90s party. When you think 90s you think No Limit, Jump Around, Sandstorm, Snoop Dog, Sash, The Prodigy etc and believe me we got it all.. People dancing their ass off with neon lights. What better to go to a 90s party with the people you spent the 90s with?? The party was yesterday and it is legendary already.

The Prodigy - Breathe
